It’s highly contagious and spreads through coughing, sneezing, sneezes, and even contact with infected stools. Hand, foot and mouth disease is common in children but rare in healthy adults. Most adults are immune to the virus because they had contact with it as a child. Early symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease include a fever and sore throat, followed by sores or blisters in your mouth and on your hands and feet. The incubation period is three to six days. During this time, the virus can be passed on. There’s no specific treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease, but there are steps that you can take to ease your symptoms. Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral infection caused by a strain of Coxsackie virus. Hand foot and mouth disease is a common infection in children three to ten years of age. Hand, foot and mouth disease can sometimes be confused with strep throat at first until the test results for strep come back negative. The virus in the hand, foot and mouth disease cannot be destroyed by the acid in the stomach, and can live on surfaces for several hours. : Once a person gets the virus, it takes an average of one to two days for the symptoms to develop. People are most contagious in the first week of illness, but the virus may still be present up to one week after symptoms go away. The virus itself in hand, foot and mouth disease may be present longer in children and those whose immune system are weak. There is no vaccine available, and there is no drug that specifically kills the virus. However, symptomatic treatment would be acetaminophen that reduces fever and discomfort is currently recommended. Mouthwashes and sprays may lessen the oral discomfort. Fluids are also suggested to prevent dehydration. Do not drink acidic juices which may irritate the mouth ulcers. Also, some physicians may also recommend Benadryl containing get or liquids to treat the hand and foot discomfort. The key to preventing hand, foot and mouth disease is good hand washing and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing. Hand foot and mouth disease infections are mild and may not even cause any symptoms. It is common for the virus to cause an upper respiratory tract infection with sore throat and/or runny nose, as well as having a fever. By day two, the patient may get small tender blisters and red spots on the palms, soles of the feet,inside the mouth, and sometimes on the buttocks as well. In the mouth, sores occur on the tongue, gums, and cheeks. In some cases the patient will get a skin rash before the blister. The blister will then break open and crust over which usually goes away within a week or so. Hand, foot and mouth disease is rare in healthy adults, so the risk of infection during pregnancy is very low. If a pregnant woman gets hand, foot and mouth disease, the risk of complications is also very low. There is some limited evidence that catching hand, foot and mouth disease during pregnancy may result in miscarriage in very rare cases. There’s normally no risk to your unborn baby if you catch hand, foot and mouth disease. However, newborns may also obtain the virus from infected adults or children. This can usually happen in the nurseries or be transmitted during pregnancy at the time of delivery. During delivery, the infant can come into contact with the mother’s secretions. Some infected babies will have a mild illness, but infants are at higher risk. Hand, foot and mouth disease is spread from person to person. The virus may be spread by coming in contact with respiratory secretions from infected persons. If an infected person was to rub their runny noses and then touch a surface, that surface can harbor the virus and become a source of infection. The infection is spread when another person touches the contaminated surface and then touches his or her mouth or nose. Hand, foot and mouth disease can also be spread if you are in contact with infected stool, such as changing a diaper. The virus can be spread if unwashed hands get contaminated with fecal matters and you touch your face. This usually happens within day care centers or nurseries. The hand, foot and mouth disease is not a new infectious disease, it is a global epidemic. In 1981 Shanghai, China was the first to discover the disease after more than a dozen provinces and cities have reported the incidence. (WordPress, 2010)The following is outbreaks of the hand, foot and mouth disease for its following year. 1997- Thirty-one children died in an outbreak. 1998- There was an outbreak in Taiwan, affecting mainly children. There were four hundred and five severe complications, and seventy-eight children died. The total number of cases in that epidemic was estimated to have been 1. 5 million. 2006- There were cased of the hand, foot and mouth disease that were reported in some western parts of India. 2007- The largest outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease in India occurred in the eastern part of the country in West Bengal. Authors found thirty-eight cases of hand, foot and mouth disease in and around Kolkata. 2008- An outbreak in China, beginning in March in Fuyang led to twenty-five thousand infections, and forty-two deaths by May 13. Similar outbreaks were reported in Singapore, more than two thousand six hundred cases as of April 20, 2008. 2009- Seventeen children died in an outbreak during March and April 2009 in China’s eastern Shandong Province. Eighteen children died in the neighboring Henan Province. Out of one hundred fifteen thousand reported cases in China from January to April, seven hundred seventy three were severe and fifty were fatal. In Indonesia, where the disease is often called Singaporen influenza, the disease was reported in Jakarta area starting with eight young children. By late April, health agencies in Jakarta were warning community health centers and encouraging preventive steps, including the use of thermal scanners in airports and avoiding travel to Singapore. 2010- In China, an outbreak occurred in southern China. Until March, seventy thousand, seven hundred fifty-six children existed infected and forty died from the disease. In conclusion, I had decided to do my research on Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease because my daughter who is two years old had been diagnosed with this viral disease just recently. I was surprised to know that it even existed. When my daughter was seen by a doctor and I heard the name of the infection, I honestly got it mixed with mad cow disease which has a similar name. After doing much research, I am glad that I learned more about what was going on with my daughter. Yes, it was true she did have all the symptoms and rashes as stated. At this moment, my daughter attends a  preschool which is where I believe she caught the virus infection. I would like to take more precaution knowing what I know being that I also have another daughter at home. American Connector Corporation makes electrical connectors at a plant in Sunnyvale, California. With applications from military, aerospace to consumer electronics and appliances, there is great difference in terms of specifications also. Standard designs were established by International Institute of Connectors and Interconnect Technology, the National Electronics Distributors Association or by the end user. There is rumor of entry of DJC Corporation of Japan which was a dominant supplier of electrical connectors in Japan. DJC had not established itself in the US as it had no plants in the US and but a small sales force. This created problem for ACC who also had problems of their own with regard to Sunnyvale plant where costs were increasing and quality of production was decreasing. Threat of DJC to American Connector Company Due to the operational excellence that DJC has, ACC should be extremely concerned with their entrance to the US. DJC will be willing to operate at smaller margins to capture the market share. The intensity of the market competitiveness can result in compounding of the threat of the lower prices. ACC will have a limited amount of time for the realization of this threat and to evaluate the next course of action. Main threat to ACC from DJC comes from the operational efficiency and static cost difference and hence disregarding the arrival of unnerving competitor like DJC can immediately disrupt ACC’s pricing strategy and long term profitability. Following factors reinforces the threat of DJC to ACC- (1) Lower Material products cost – Following table shows that cost incurred by DJC as compared to ACC is lower in both the years 1986 and 1991. In 1986, DJC had 7% more COGS incurred as compared to ACC while at the end 1991, they were reduced by 40%. If DJC sets up manufacturing base in US Landscape, there will be substantial raw material cost reduction for DJC as compared to ACC. (2) Lower defect rate and greater efficiency- The quality losses for ACC is 1.6% against 0.7% of DJC. The defect rates at Sunnyvale’s are as high  as 26000ppm of production and its quality control is end product inspection as compared to process centric quality control in DJC. (3) Higher Fixed Asset utilization- The effective utilization of fixed assets (in %) for DJC is 75.4% as compared to mere 30.2% of ACC. (4) Lower Work In process inventory- Kawasaki Plant of DJC had processing lead times and work-in-process inventories averaging for only two days against high inventory levels of ACCâ⠂¬â„¢s Sunnyvale Plant. (5) Lower Raw Material Inventories- The raw material inventories of ACC averaged for 10.8 days which is more than double than DJC’s average of only 5 days, which in results in less inventory cost and reduced finished good cost. (6) Higher responsiveness to customer order delivery- Because of highly automated production process at Kawasaki plant of DJC, the speed of order delivery is one day whereas ACC works on batch production process which produces about 4,500 varieties of connectors, hence they have more than one day However, DJC will face a number of challenges in implementing its Kawasaki Factory model in USA which are mentioned below- (1) Customer Contacts- DJC would not be able to leverage its strength to the fullest in USA as it would have to compete in a new market with no major contacts. (2) Flexibility of Production process- Batch production process of ACC renders it great flexibility in terms of customization of products to its customers as compared to DJC. (3) Production and Inventory Control- There are 700 standard connector product lines in North America alone and ACC makes 4500 SKU’s and some product lines were run on almost continuously basis. So it would be very difficult for DJC to be able to maintain such long run times when they need to produce almost 8 times the number of varieties of connectors they produce at Kawasaki. (4) Finished Goods Inventory- DJC carries 56 days of finished goods inventory as compared to 38 days of ACC and given the short life cycles of electronics, DJC faces high risk of being obsolete. (5) Demand Variability- DJC’s product oriented layout operated on high volumes and low variety production, thus reducing costs. However USA does not have a certain demand for such high volume products. How big are the cost differences between DJC’s plant and ACC’s Sunnyvale plant? Consider both DJC’s performance in Kawasaki and its potential in the United States. Conflicting Values between Phaedra and the Nurse Essay

To what extent do the values of the Nurse conflict to with the values of Phaedra in lines 433 to 481?  To a large extent the values of the nurse conflict with those of Phaedra , however both agree that one cannot contradict the will of the gods and at different points both coincide that in the given situation it would be better to die.  At the beginning Phaedra expresses her wish to go hunting and horse riding, suggesting that she desires to be near Hippolytus , yet by doing so she would be break the social convention that dictated women could only leave the house for religious purposes . The nurse knows this, and warns her that to challenge the norm would is madness ‘words that ride on madness’ .However once Phaedra’s secret is revealed it is the Nurse the one who advocates a departure from the social code, while Phaedra strives to uphold her reputation and society’s values. It can be argued that their values differ or alternatively that the Nurse supp orts the same social values, except to a lesser extent and considers that these do not apply to love. Yet, both women share the same values which respect to fate and the divine intervention of gods in mortal’s lives. Phaedra mentions that she was † failing to win victory over Cypris † this indicates she is aware that she cannot overcome her fate or the god’s wishes , so she settles to commit suicide. The Nurse upholding the same value but for a different purpose states ‘ No one can bear the force of Cypris † here she points put that mortals are helpless against the will of the gods and therefore Phaedra should just let things be. With respect to destiny and veneration to gods both uphold the same values however they derive different conclusions from them . Previously the Nurse establishes her admiration for moderation † I praise excess less than moderation†, in contrast Phaedra seems to prefer to have a tendency towards the extremes, first she wishes to go hunting to follow Hippolytus and later to die. Here we see how they have contrasting opinions. Additionally they differ on what should be done with Phaedra’s forbidden love. The Nurse explains that to be in love is nothing extraordinary † you are in love – what is so surprising about that ? † her rhetorical question implies that the situation is not atypical and that it can be easily resolved without resorting to extremes. Furthermore she argues that the curse is not Phaedra’s fault and that she shouldn’t have to die for it. On the contrary Phaedra wishes to repress her feelings deeming them unacceptable. Mean while the Nurse tries to convince her that love is something beautiful and cannot be denies , not even by the gods † Zeus once desired to bed Semele† she implies that Phaedra suppress her feelings but resign herself to them .This goes against every value of virtue and reputation that Phaedra esteems. Phaedra would rather die than be unfaithful, she despises women who †lay claim to virtue † but †dare to commit shameful deeds† . She is concerned about her reputation and the effect this one can have on her house and her children. To this the Nurse responds † mortals should not put too much effort on achieving perfection† implying that she cannot have a perfect reputation. Phaedra expands on the unacceptable behavior of unfaithful women, yet later the Nurse counter argues that men too behave in this way ‘many fathers help their sons in love affairs†. They disagree on the worth of reputation, the Nurse revealing her corrupt moral values, however it can be argued that she wishes to deter her mistress’s suicidal intentions. After all she does show great duty towards her and even declares that she †can no longer exist† after Phaedra reveals her secret. Thus is can be concluded that to a large extent the values of the Nurse conflict with those of Phaedra , however they both coincide that fate nor the will of the gods can be denied.
